A bar association is a professional body of lawyers. Some bar associations
are responsible for the regulation of the legal profession in their
jurisdiction; others are professional organizations dedicated to serving
their members; in many cases, they are both.In many Commonwealth
jurisdictions, the "bar association" comprises lawyers who are qualified as
barristers or advocates, while the "law society" comprises solicitors. These
bodies are sometimes mutually exclusive. In other jurisdictions, the "bar"
may refer to the entire community of persons engaged in the practice of
law.In the United States, admission to the bar is permission granted by a
particular court system to a lawyer to practice law in that system.
This is to be distinguished from membership in a bar association. In the
United States, some states require bar association membership for all
attorneys, while others do not.
A Mandatory or Integrated bar association is one to which a state delegates
the authority to regulate the admission of attorneys to practice in that
state; typically these require membership in that bar association to
practice in that state. In the other states, membership in the bar
associations is voluntary. There are many other bar associations, typically
organized by geography, area of practice, or affiliation. The Florida Bar is
the mandatory state bar association for the state of Florida. It is the
third largest such bar association in the United States. Its duties include
the regulation and discipline of attorneys.
Persons seeking admission to the Florida Bar must pass a character and
fitness screening administered by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. This
includes passing a background investigation and a written bar exam. The
International Bar Association is an international association of lawyers
from different countries.
